SHORT-WEIGHT BUTTER

The matter of short weight export butter has been under consideration by the Dairy Control Hoard for. some time, during whieli they have been'conferring with Jlr. W. 11. Singleton, , the director ,of the dairy division (states a circular issued by the Hoard). During the season,' in which pooling was in operation, it was found that under :i standard of 561 b. 6oz. there was a good deal of trouble with short’ weights in Great Britain. The dairy division have carried out a number of experiments. The, results of these go to. show that if the grocer is to receive 561 b. of butter after the paper has been removed, the minimum gross weight including paper when weighed in New Zealand, should be. 561 b.. 7oz. . This would make no allowance, for: certain butters which seem to shrink more than (others, or for those butters which'are most inclined to adhere to ■ the- paper. Under these circumstances, it would appear that 561 b. Boz. should be the objective.
