WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE
WILL GOVERNMENT TAKE OVER?
Following on an announcement recently that, as part of the general closing down of the business of Messrs. A. Hatrick and’ Co., the Wanganui river service, which has been in existence since 1880, would, unless old complete, be abandoned at the end of the year, a deputation waited upon the Minister of Lands (Hon. A. D. McLeod), yesterday, and urged that the service be maintained. While pointing out that it was not the policy of the Government to take over private businesses if it cptild be at all avoided, the Minister assured the deputation that the Government would fie prepared to consider the question of granting a subsidy. He stated that he would like the next move to come from the River Trust.
