FORESTRY LEAGUE

ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the New Zealand Forestry League was held last night, Mt. J. Deans (Canterbury) presiding. In the course of his presidential address, which dealt extensively with his impressions of forestry, gained during his recent trip to Europe, Mr. Deans said that it had been stated that' now the forestry service was in full working order, it was not necessary to have a forestry league. This opinion, however, he did not agree with. The annual report stated that at the conference held in July last, it was resolved to ask the Government to prepare a statement showing the timber resources of the Empire, and to further t.hc Imperial policy of afforestation. “It is understood," says the report, “that this matter, is in progress, and that a considerable amount of information as to the Imperial resources will be placed before the Forest Conference, which meets in Aus tralia this: year.” Mention of Kapiti Island is also made in the report:—“lt is gratifying to repott that adequate steps arc being taken to deal with the wild sheep on the island. During the year, over 800 sheep have been shot, and it is believed that there arc now very few remaining on the Island. The question of opossum trapping ou KapFl Island has been under consideration, and the policy of the Department appears to be to have au arrangement with the caretaker to trap opossums, but it does not. seem to be the policy of the Department to eliminate opossums from the island, it is hoped the incoming council will make further representations to have Kapiti Island reserved as a bird sanctuary only. Referring to the annual competition, the report says:—“The first prize tn the grade, 12 to 16 years, Is awarded to Miss Pat : Fleming, Wellington, age 12 years, for a comprehensive well-mounted collection. For the second place, two boys have tied:—Joshua McDonald? Marton, age 12 years, and Ivo G. Bishop, Marton, age 14 years, whose entries were very nearly alike. The third place is also tied for by two boys. In the lower grade (under 12 years) the first prize is awarded to Miss Monica Martin, age 11, and second prize to Jack Prichard, Bulls, age 11. Tlie thanks of the council are due to Mr. E. Phillips Turner, who acted as judge.” , x . The following officers were elected tor the ensuing year:—President.' Mr. J. Deans (Canterbury).
