“P.W.D.”
In proposing the toast of tlie Public Works Department at the annual dinner of the Electric Supply Authority Engineers’ Association last night, Mr. E. Hitchcock said that many explanations of the term “I’.W.D.” hail been given. A visitor to Mangahao had been assured by one official that the letters stood for "Pretty Well Dammed.” (Laughter.) . ‘ Io responding, Mr. Furkert humourously remarked that “P.W.D.” stood for "Paid Wet or Dry,” and also for “Pretty Well Done,” while Mr. !•'. T. M. Kissell assured his hearers''.that lite letters really meant “Pay Well Deserved.”
