Following upon the coolts’ refusal to sign on for the Huddart Parlier steamer Barwon, (he owners have suspended the picking up crews for all ships. SPEEDY SETTLEMENT EXPECTED (Rec. June 19, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, June 19. The Barwon trouble is believed to be the outcome of the vessel sailing last week from Adelaide without cooks. The crew, who are all unionists, are being paid a victualling allowance. It is understood the cooks are acting under union orders, but it is believed the trouble will be speedily settled and will not interrupt the resumption of normal services.

SELECTION OF LABOUR AT SHIP’S SIDE EFFORT TO CIRCUMVENT OWNERS’ RIGHT BEING MADE BY COOKS’' UNION . Sydney, June 19. A crew for tbe Uliniaroa. will be engaged to-ffiorrow. The vessel is n dock, and will be sailing for Wellington on Friday. The Cooks’ Union is trying to circumvent tbe owners’ right to select labour at the ship's side, and has decided to impose a fine of three guineas, with twelve months’ expulsion, if any member accepts employment outside the union rooms. i* [Under the terms of settlement of the cooks’ strike the owners were to have an entirely [jj’ee hand in the selection of the men for the galleys, either through the union, at the ship’s side, or at the shipping offices. Every assistance was to be given by the in: ion officials in the selection of the galley staffs, and, subject to the uni >n giving an undertaking to this effect, the shipowners would raise no objection to the union keeping a list at its office showing the dates of unemployment registration in order to facilitate priority of selection. The difficulty of the roster system was met by the owners with a suggestion that a list of unemployed cooks should be submitted to the owners, and the latter shoul engage the men in rotation, subject to the men being suitable.] MARINE STEWARDS CLAIM AND COUNTERCLAIM (Rec. June 19, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, June 19.. As a counter-claim to the marine stewards, whose new log has been subI niitted to the Arbitration Court and claims increased wages and shorter hours, the owners have submitted a log asking for a general reduction of wages and an increase in the daily hours- of work.
