AUCKLAND’S CIVIC SQUARE
IMPORTANT BUILDING PROPOSAL
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, May 16.
Auckland’s unsightly civic square is to undergo a radical change in the near future. Negotiations which have been going on for some time for the acquisition of a considerable portion of the land on the Queen Street and the Wellesley Street frontages for the construction of a large block of buildings, embracing a modern theatre, have been practically completed. Questioned this morning in regard to the matter the Mayor (Mr. G. Baildon) said he hoped in the course of a day or two to be able to announce that the City Council had disposed of a very large portion of Civic Square. He was unable, he said, to give any details as to who were the interested parties. Mr. Baildon did not deny, when directly asked, that a prominent theatre proprietor was Interested. It is understood that plans have been prepared for a theatre which will cost £lOO,OOO, and will seat 3000 people. Provision will be made for 28 shops.
