An old-fashioned but highly effective method of removing a papa bank at the site of the new wharf is being employed by Mr. F. Goodman, contractor for the wharf construction (reports the Gisborne “Herald”). A steam pump, drawing its power from the boiler of one of the pileframes, and its water from the river, drives a strong jet of water through a jiose. which jet is directed on the bank, breaking down the spoil and sweeping It into the basin. A gang of men with gbovels would have difficulty in keeping pace with the hydraulic worker, which requires the attention of only three mtn.
