GOLF

BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY HAGEN •*’' k . (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 11. Archie. Compston, .the .British golfer, made a magnificent fight to recover the open golf championship for Great Britain at Sandwich. The American, Walter Hagen, however, won with 292, Gene Sarazen (United States) being second. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) London, May 11. Hagen’s lion heartedness gave him his third British 'championship after a neck-and-neck struggle, in which Sarazen, Jurado, and Compston kept in the running till the last round. The young Argentinian surprised everyone in the earlier rounds. He is*slightly built and graceful, and of the art, not strength, type of player, but he found the gruelling ordeal of the fourth round fatal, and he lost all chance when he took 41 for the first half of the journey. . Compston, Britain’s greatest hope, lost his hope of the championship at the third hole of the last round, with a fearful seven. His drive went into a bunker, and there, disregarding safety as the first rule, he tried to force a long shot, with the result that he pushed the ball further into the sand.

Compston had a dreadful five at the short sixth. The remainder of the round was wonderful, courageous golf. \

All the week the Britishers had hoped against hope that Mitchell or Duncan would have an inspired round and come to the front, but neither could keep out of trouble.

The weather was fine throughout, but there were strong and often bitterly cold winds. Large crowds followed the players. The Duke of York on Thursday walked round a good way with Mitchell, and today the Prince of W’ales, after playing an early morning round on the Prince’s course with Wethered, the Hon. Michael Scott, and Major Lees mingled freely with the gallery in the afternoon, generally unrecognised. Later he presented the prizes. Hagen said that he had never won a championship with less confidence. He scarcely felt master of any club in his bag, and was surprised that he did so well. The fact that he knew the course well was a great help. The “Daily Express” in an editorial says that golfers the world over must do homage to Hagen, who, except possibly for Bobby Jones, must be reckoned the world’s greatest tournament golfer. Hagen’s victory is particularly meritorious after suffering such a drubbing by Compston, which would have shaken the nerves of anyone with a less persistent will to win. HUTT CLUB Conditions were ideal on Saturday. The fairways and greens were in good order, and this was reflected in the many good cards handed in- The bogey for the course is 74, and the sixteen to quality for the Hughes Memorial equalled or bettered this.
