SICK IN LIGHTHOUSE
NEED FOR WIRELESS SET Dominion Special Service. Gisborne, May 11. In connection with the incident on Portland Island on Thursday morning when the lighthouse keeper had to signal a passing vessel by Morse lamp to take his sick wife to hospital in Napier, ft is recalled that this is the second incident of this nature in about one year.
The subject was dismissed by- the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce some months ago when members predicted that it was quite possible that a much more serious incident would occur, and it was then decided to ask the Minister of Marine to have a wireless set installed on the island, to which a reply was received stating that the matter would be carefully considered. Apparently nothing has been done. Portland Island is a spec of land at the end of Mahia Peninsula, separated from the mainland by about one mile of water, but the channel at times is very swift and the rocky bottom would interfere with the laying of a cable.
