BASKETBALL

MEETING OF REFEREES. A meeting of basketball referees was held at the Y.W.C.A. on Wednesday night, the following being present:— Mesdames IL Muir, W. Campbell., Misses Storie, Tait, Armstrong, Manson, Lawler, Sampson, Creagh, Millar, McCartney, Walker, Messrs. MacDermott, Elviues, Howe, Moller, Austin, and D. Campbell.

Owing to the large increase in the number of teams this year, it was decided that in the interests of the game, it was imperative that the refereeing be much stricter, and the time had come when it was necessary that a referees’ association be formed. Mr. MacDermott’s motion that this -be done was carried unanimously, Miss D. Tait being appointed convener, and Miss Manson secretary.

A discussion of the rules followed. It was decided that after two warnings for a technical foul had been given against the same player, the option of a free pass, or free throw at goal be the penalty for a further breach.

Kindergarten Council.

The Wellington Free Kindergarten Council met on Monday last, Mrs. D. C. Peacock presiding. A report was read from the acting principal, Miss Thorpe, who reported good progress on the part of the students for their first term. There are large waiting lists at all the kindergartens and the council has just purchased more chairs and equipment in order that more little children may be admitted. Several very successful morning tea parties have been held at Brooklyn during-the month, and much interest aroused in the work. The council expresses its deep appreciation of a legacy left to the association by the late Miss Stowe, and intends ear- • marking the gift for some special purpose. The annual “Street Day” will take place next Friday, when it is hoped that the public will respond liberally to the appeal. A vote of thanks was passed to the City Council for their grant of £lOO to the general funds of the association.
