When visiting Te Reinga. Jlr. A. Kean, the Gisborne Acclimatisation Society’s ranger found the fossilised remains of several vertebrae embedded in some limestone just above the Te Reinga falls, at a spot where it would be .covered by water when the river is in Hood. A number of other persons have seen these fossilised vertebrae, which are about 3iu. wide, one being very distinct, and the rest not quite so clearly defined. Jlr. Kean thinks that the vertebrae are the remains of some marine species of prehistoric timesji From the formation of the country thereabouts (states the ‘•Daily Telegraph”) there is very little doubt that many years ago this part of Te Reinga was once under the sea.
