SHOOTING SEASON OPENING

FAIR RESULTS SECURED. At. the YVellington Acclimatisation Society’s meeting last night a ranger’s report on the opening of the 1928 shooting season was received. It stated that weather conditions wOre very bad throughtout the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts. On account of the dry spell nearly all the small lagoons were dried up, and the ducks consequently went to tho larger waters. The permit to take pukeko was the only compensation a large number of shooters had, and they certainly availed themselves of the privilege. Two guns at Palmerston took 35. At the larger lakes at Himatangi and Foxton duck shooting was fair. Fourteen guns on one lake got 122, and on another lake eight guns got 153. At Linton nine guns got 120. Probably more pheasants wore shot in the vicinity of Palmerston this opening than for a number of years. Several shooters reported getting a brace, an almost unheard-of thing in the district.
