FORMIDABLE FOOD BILL Dominion Special Service. Auckland, May 6. Approximately one-fifth of the annual maintenance cost of Auckland Hospital, excluding overhead charges, is absorbed in bills for food. There is a daily average of about 600 patients in the hospital, ad the fdod required dailv comprises 2101 b. of meat, 1401 b. fish,* 401 b. poultry, 501 b. butter, 100 gallons of milk and cream. 30 dozen eggs, “00 loaves of bread. 301 b. of flour. These figures are large when it is remembered that the majority of the patients are sick and they eat very little food.’
The cost of all the foodstuffs varies from £lB,OOO to £20.000 a year, while £lOOO is spent yearly on wines and spirits.
