SHIPMENTS OF LAMB FROM AUSTRALIA The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has just received a cablegram from its representative in Australia advising that 10.144 carcases of lamb were exported from Australia for the fortnight ended February 17.

FARMING INTERESTS PIG-BREEDING ASSOCIATION CUP AWARDED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 20. The cups presented by the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association for competition amongst breeders exhibiting in the Tamworth and Berkshire sections at the Manawatu, Feilding, Marton and Levin Shows, were won this year by Mr. J. A. Russell, a well-known pig breeder in the Manawatu. Mr. Russell’s win was an extremely creditable one. The awards are as follow:— Manawatu Show.—Berkshire section: J. A. Messrs. Levin and Company, Limited, report as follows on the Feilding ewe fair last Friday:—We had a good yarding of all ages. There was a large attendance of both local and outside buyers and we had a total clearance of our entry. Ewes suitable for breeding black face iambs were in good demand throughout. and prices improved as the sale proceeded. The two-tooth s, of which there was a yarding of good quality, were keenly sought after. Prices on most entries show an appreciable increase of approximately ss. to 7s. per head to vendors above values received in 1927. LONDON MARKETS HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLED REPORT The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram dated February 18 from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Tallow. Market quiet at last quotation. Eggs. Large supplies of best coining forward and business is dull at lower prices. Market is bare of cheaper descriptions. Present quotations are: —Danish, 16s. to 18 per long 100; French and Dutch, 15s. to 175.; English and Belgian, 14s. 6d. to 165.; Egyptian, 9s. 6d. to 10s. 6d. Apples. Demand is moderate for American boxed apples, except for Newton Pippin, for which there is a good market. Present quotations are:—Oregon Newtown, Ils. to 18s. per box; Californian Newtown, 12s. to 14s ; Rome Beauty and Winesap, 9s. to 12s. Honey. Market steady, with moderate demand. The New Zealand Dairy Produce Board has received the following market report from its London office dated February 17 :— Butter.

Retail prices unchanged. The board has also received the following advice from its agents in Canada : Butter: New York, 45 cents (Is. 10}d.); Montreal. 37 cents (Is 6}d.), Canadian market over-supplied; San Francisco, 45 cents (Is. lOld.): Vancouver (market weak due over-supplies), New Zealand finest 36} cents (Is. GJd.), firsts 36 cents (Is. 6d.), seconds 35 cents (Is. s}d.). OTHER ADVICES The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office as at close of business last week :— Butte.—Quiet. 1625. to 1665. per cwt. Cheese. —Firm. 945. to 955. per cwt. Frozen Meat.—The market is weaker for heavy-weight wethers; light-weights remain steady. The market is short of supplies of ewes, and prices are nominal. Lamb is expected to go lower owing to larger supplies arriving. Trade in l>eef is slow.
