NEW PICTURE THEATRE
1 TO BE ERECTED IN CHRISTCHURCH. Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 18. Arrangements have been completed for acquiring the Royal Exchange Building, Cathedral Square, for a picture theatre on an elaborate scale. The group interested in the acquisition of the building is of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., the company operating Havwards Pictures, Ltd., and Fullers’ Pictures, Ltd., Waters and Spence, Ltd., the company now operating the Crystal Palace and Everybody’s, and Mr. E. J. Righton. It is possible that other interests will take part in the project. It is intended to remodel the exterior of the building, bringing it into line with the great modern office buildings of larger cities. Modern'shop fronts, specially lighted, outside lighting schemes, and other innovations will be made in the interior of the building. The new theatre will have a 40ft. entrance to Cathedral Square, and among its many features will be a scheme of colour effect electric lighting. . It will be some time before this theatre is constructed. One of the promoters will leave soon for England and Europe to arrange for the installation of a new decorative scheme which has gained popularity elsewhere.
