OPENING DAY’S RESULTS WELLINGTON BANDS’ SUCCESS WANGANUI WINS PIPE CONTEST By Telegraph.—Pbess association. Christchurch, February 19. The New Zealand annual brass baud contest opened ou Saturday with B and C grade brass band, and Highland pipe band quicksteps in the afternoon, and C. grade and pipe band tests iu tho evening. The weather was perfect for the quickstep fixtures, aud a very large crowd witnessed the events. For the tipst time provision for pipe bands has been made in the- programme, aud pipers have come from ali parts of the Dominion to take part in the contest. Six A grade bands are competing this year, four B grade, three C grade, and seven pipe bands. Tho judges are .Messrs. E. Jackson of Brisbane, who will decide test selections, and W. S. King, of Christchurch, who will adjudicate iu solo events. A full programme is mapped out for the week, concluding with A grade quickstep on Saturday. Temuka Municipal I'M 4th Cadet Battalion (Christchurch) 120 Mosgiel Municipal 113 Mosgiel, having scored a total of 196 points for music in the Quickstep and test selection, is tho winner of Charles Begg ami Co.’s Cup for C Grade Band gaining the highest: number of points in music, including Quickstep. HIGHLAND PIPE BANDS. There was no set test piece in tho Pipa Band section, but each band hud to play a selection comprising March, Slow, March, Strathspey, and Reel. The judge was Pipe Major D. Mathieson. late 79th Cameron Highlanders.
