RIFLE SHOOTING AT TRENTHAM

AUSTRALIANS ON THE RANGE FRIENDLY MATCH FOR VISITORS WELLINGTON TEAM AHEAD Teams representative of New South Wales, Victoria, Wellington, and the Wairarapa met in friendly rivalry in a match arranged in honour of the visiting Australian riflemen at Trentham on Saturday. Each team consisted of ten men, each of whom had seven shots, two sighters allowed, at ranges of 300, 500, and COO yards. The winners were the Wellington No. 1 team with an aggregate of 947, while Wairarapa were a point behind in second place, and Victoria third with an aggregate of 916. The Australian marksmen who took part in a friendly match with Wellington and Wairarapa teams on Saturday found conditions to their liking, expressing themselves well preased with the ammunition, while a slight wind blowing across the range did not appear to occasion them any great trouble. The best showing of the visitors was that made by the Victorian team, many of whom have been camping at Trentham during the past few days, getting themselves accustomed to local conditions. On Saturday they spoke in glowing terms of the assistance that the Camp Commandant, Captain H. H. Whyte, had given them in settling down in their new surroundings. They all expressed themselves as being very grateful for what the captain had done for them. “We have never had anything like it before,” said one of the .Victorian men. An aggregate of 9-17 out of a possible 1050 placed the Wellington. No. 1 team in the leading position, Wairarapa being second with 946. The two best individual scores were a 102 secured by E. Ballinger, of the Wellington No. 1 team, and a score of 100 by G. Bruce, of the Victorian team. Fourth plaec ■was secured by Wellington No. 3 team with an aggregate of 91'2, while Wellington No. 2 were fifth with 911. The New South Wales team were in last place with 890, but considering they have been travelling ever since they arrived at Auckland early last week, and only came off the Limited on Saturday morning, and further had not fired a shot since they left Australia, they did remarkably well under conditions that were completely new to them. Before the teams went down to the mounds at Trentham on Saturday, the chairman of the Wellington Rifle Association, Mr. W. J. H. Haase, welcomed the visitors and wished them an enjoyable stay in the Dominion, these remarks being endorsed by the president of the Wairarapa Asociation, Mr. J. F. Thompson. Many of the visitors proceeded to Greytown by car after Saturday’s match, in readiness for the Wairarapa Association’s meeting, which commences at Papawai this morning, while the remainder crossed the Rimutakas yesterday morning to attend an outing arranged in their honour at Mount Holdsworth during the day. At the conclusion of the Wairarapa meeting on Tuesday most of the competitors will return to Trentham for the National Rifle Association meeting opening on Thursday. Details of the scores, with teams given in order of merit, are as follow:—
