THE MARLBOROUGH TRIP ENJOYABLE WEEK-END Some teu rinks of bowlers, representing ten of the eighteen clubs comprised in tho 'Wellington Bowling Centre, returned from a week-end trip to -Marlborough bv tho Tainahine last evening. One and all declared that the trip had been one of tho liftist enjoyable on record, thanks to the good spirit which prevailed among the parly, and to the splendid hospitality of the Marlborough bowlers and cent re. Arrived at Ficton on Friday evening, the whole of the parly of fifty bowlers were accommodt'Jcil at the Terminus Hotel, where a social evening was spent, under the chairmanship of the president of 'He centro (Mr. M. Marks), whose unflagging soirits and unlimited repertoire of stories, ancient and modern, was a feature of the evening. As the whole ot the bowlers could not be accommodated on tho Ficton green, six links remained there while four went on to the Blenheim green. . . At the pretty Pieton green the visitors were warmly welcomed by the president, Mr. J. Carnahan, who extended the warmest greetings tc tho M ellington howlers, and expressed tho hope that they would enjoy every minute of their stay in I’ictou. Mr. .1. Jones, Mayor of Picton, said ho was pleased to extend a- cordial welcome to tho visitors. Ho understood that tho partv was the largest which had ever left ‘Wellington—certainly the largest that had ever visited Marlborough, and, like the Americans, he hoped they would come in ever-increasing numbers, so as to spread tho tamo of Picton and the always beautiful Sounds. The president (Mr. Marks), iti returning thanks for the welcome, said that it was uni'ortunafe that they could not stay longer than the morning at .Picton, but thev had to get back to Wellington, as tho‘Victorian bowlers (from Melbourne) were duo thero on Tuesday morning. Un tlie Blenheim Club green the visitors were welcomed by Mr. D. Haswell (president), and Mr. Malcolm Mackenzie, Mayor of tho town, who drew attention to the fact that the party was the largest which had ever visited Blenheim, aud, ho understood, had over left Wellington, and he had much pleasure iu conferring the freedom of the city on them. Mr. M. Marks replied in characteristic vein, and Mr. S. M. Stone, vicepresident of the Dominion Bowling Association, hoped that Marlborough would send rinks to the big tournament to be held iu Wellington in January next. After a game on the Blenheim and Riversdale greens, where the Wellington bowlers received a severe trouncing, tho Marlborough Centre entertained tho whole of the visitors at dinner at the Criterior Hotel, which was a very delightful function. Mr. Haswell presided, and proposed the health of the visitors, coiinled with the names of Messrs. M. Marks, S. Stone and J. Kershaw, who replied, congratulating, the Marlborough centre on tho part it was playing in keeping up the best traditions of the game in sunny Marlborough. Mr. Mills proposed tho “Ladies,” and Air. A. M. Thomson replied. The proceedings were punctuated with choral interjections of a humorous character that created much laughter. Yesterday was spqht in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, the visitors being the guests of the'local bowlers at a launch picnic, held at Monkey Bay, a pretty litle cove in Tory Channel, where there was both good bathing and a convenient fishing ground. The party, was accompanied by Mr. Carnahan (president of the Pieton Club). Mr. Haswoll (president o*' Hie Blenheim Club), a number of local howlers, and their lady friends. Tho weather was perfect, and the outing was all that could bo desired. Speeches of appreciation wore made as tho launches returned to the Piston wharf, and cheers given as tho party departed.
