A ROUGH TRIP
HINEMOA FROM NORFOLK ISLAND
Further information is now to hand regarding the extremely rough passage experienced by the Government steamer, Hinemoa, en route from Norfolk Island to Auckland, which port was reached on Saturday. It was the strongest blow experienced at the island for over 20 years. The Hinemoa sailed from Auckland on December 28, and shortly after clearing the North Cape ran into dirty weather which. continued right up to her arrival at Norfolk. Arriving off Kingston at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Eve it was found that a landing there was impossible owing to the enormous, sea which were running. Signals, were flying from the flagstaff ordering the Hinemoa to stand off. Captain Macdonald decided to make for the Cascades anchorage on the lee side of the island, but on arrival there conditions, if anything, were worse. An attempt was made in the ship’s surf boat, in charge of Air. Wilson, chief officer, to make the landing, but despite the expert handling of the little craft the surf boat was forced to return to the ship. Again the anchor was brought aboard and the Hinemoa made for the anchorage at Headstones. An attempt was made there to land the passengers and New Year’s mail, but the sea was mountainous, high and the gale was then at the height of its fury. By careful navigation Captain Macdonald managed to anchor the Hinemoa in the lee of the reef at Headstones, and all night long an anxious watch was kept by the Hinemoa’s officers. * Beyond a lull on New Year’s Day the Hinemoa made for Headstones again, and by splendid management all the passengers and mails were safely landed. During a lull on New Year’s Day of the famous pine trees on Norfolk Island no damage was 'done ashore by the gale. The Hinemoa did not escape from the storm area until two days after her departure. A strong easterly gale, with high seas, continued, with gradually diminishing force, until Fridav This was followed bv a heavy southeast swell, witch was felt until the. vessel reached port
