Carterton, January 10. Mr. G. Hughan lias been returned unopposed to the extraordinary vacancy on the Carterton Borough Council.

Captain H. G. Wallace, of the Carterton Corps of the Salvation Army, left on Monday on transfer to Nelson. His successors' will be Adjutant Mabel Sanson and Lieutenant Blackie, who will be welcomed to Carterton to-mor-row night. Mr. R. C. Miles, solicitor, returned to Otaki yesterday, after a holiday spent in Masterton. Mr. H. Nicolson, of Otaki, who lias been visiting Clareville, returned home yesterday. Mrs. Nicolson and family will return at a later date. A motor collision occurred at South Carterton yesterday afternoon. Mrs. F. S. Campin, of Waihakeke, was proceeding to Carterton in a five-eeater car. accompanied by her son, and on turning the Waihakeke Road corner into the main street, there occurred a collision with a car proceeding from Napier lo Wellington, and driven by Mr. W. G. Donaldson, engineer at the Waikaremoana electrical works, who had with him his wife and child. The back mudguard and running board on the driver’s side ot Mrs. Campin’s car were damaged, and the mudguard was broken and the cap knocked off the back wheel of the other car. No one was hurt, and both cars were able tq proceed under their own power. This corner is a particularly dangerous one. Deceased was well known in the Wairarapa, and for manv years was stud groom for the Donald Estate at Featherston. After the sale of the stud Clydesdales, Mr. Waddell left for the South Island, subsequently sailing for Scotland. The death occurred at the South W aiwrapa Hospital Greytown of Mrs Cecil Lenna Olsen wife of Mr. Charles Olsen, of Battersea. Deceased, who wi ,s ,, :W vears of age, was a daughter ot Mr. C. Williams, of Matahiui. and formerly of Ahiakouka. She had been ailing for some time. A widower and young family are left.
