TREE-PLANTING

SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES POSITION IN MASTERTON Masterton, January 10. The difficulty experienced in obtaining young trees for the purpose of planting in the streets of the borough is proving a considerable drawback to the Masterton Beautifying Society in its work, observed Mr. J. Allan, a member of the society, in conversation with a Dominion representative. For tins reason, he stated, tree planting would have to be modified in the borough this year, and it would not be possible to duplicate the GOO that had been planted in 1927.

Tree planting has been carried on in the borough for some time past, ami the attractive avenues that will result when the young trees reach maturity is one of the aims of the society. It was explained that nurserymen are not growing the limes, birches, and other trees suitable for street planting that are required by the society and similar organisations in other parts. *1 his is due to the fact that formerly there has been no demand for them, and it is only now that ornamental tree planting is being carried on to any extent in .New Zealand. The Masterton Society has been obtaining its plants from Wanganui nurseries, but as the trees are required to be five years old before they can be used, a shortage of supplies is now being experienced. In manv directions that the activities of the society extend, a great deal has been accomplished in Masterton during the last vear, and further work is to be carried out in 1928. It is expected that the development of the Masterton Park, following the acquisition of further land, will be carried out in part, although the actual programme for the year will .not be formulated _ until the annual meeting of the society. The generous endowments to the society by local bodies will be augmented bv the annual carnival which the society will hold shortly, and arrangements in this diretcion will shortly be made. The carnival is generally held in December, but owing to work that was under way at that time on the park oval the fixture had to be postponed until this year.
