Foxton, lO. At a meeting of the Foxton Swimming Club last night, presided over by the president (Mr. H. Hutchins), it was decided to postpone the proposed carnival until February. It was also decided to approach the Borough Council to try to obtain a grant towards the installation of electric light at the baths. , . A grass fire caused the fire brigade to turn out this afternoon, but the blaze was quickly got under. No damage was done. . . „ The monthly meeting of tne Foxton Borough Council was held last night. A motion of sympathy with Councillor M. H. Walker and relatives in their recent bereavement was passed. The road foreman reported that during the month the road staff had been engaged in patching ruts in Sandon Road and Johnston Street, and also the junction of Park and Robinson Streets; grading work was carried out. on the ■ Aloutoa, Sandon, and Avenue Roads. No. 6 Line, and Purcell Streets; posts nnd chains removed trom Triangle, and grass mowed in the cemetery. and general maintenance work carried out. The staff was st present engag(d in top-dresing the various btttimenised footpaths in the borough, with fine chips. It was decided to take no action in connection with the local halfh(,liday, the coyncil being unanimous that the half-day be Wednesday ns in past. The town clerk was granted permission to attend the Town Clerks* Con-ference-in Nelson. A review of the cost of erection of the swimming baths showed that thev had cosr £945 ss. 9d.. pins £5O paid to the clerk of works. Tho sum of £935 4s. 9(1. was raised by public effort, and since the opening of the baths the takings have been £l9 13s. 10fl By the end of the season it was honed to clear off the deficit. It wa s decided to make provision in tho estimates for tar-sealing Avenue Road.
