MANAWATU TOURNAMENT

STEADMAN BEATS LAMPtf

MALFROY AND LAMPE’S CLOSE CALL IN THE DOUBLES

Palmerston North, January 9. Bright sunshine and the total absence of all wind made the opening day of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s first annual championships and Palmerston North Club's twenty-fifth annual championship and handicap tournament very pleasant indeed. The meeting is taking place on the Palmerston Nori It Club courts, and the courts are fast and true. A Hard Double. The match of the day was the championship doubles inaTtcli between C. E. Malfroy and M. L. Lampe and Charters and Steadman. Just prior to this game, which went the full distance, Steadman had defeated Lampe in straight sets. Charters and Steadman played brilliantly at the net. in the first set, which they took 6—4. They failed to maintain the pace they had themselves set however, anil the first three games in the second set were against them when they recovered and took the next three. Charters was serving well, while he also made some remarkable recoveries. Despite this ,the superior generalship of Malfroy and Lampe enabled them to take the second set 10—8. In the deciding set Charters and Steadman broke through their opponents’ service and at one stage led 3—l. But here again Malfroy and Lampe assisted tliemsolves, and after drawing level at 4 all they went on to win the set and match 7—5. The spectators who witnessed, this match were rewarded by as brilliant an exposition of the net game as has been seen locally since last year’s tournament. Malfroy is playing well and though he did not have many opportunities to use it, his backhand is there. His service, too, was a constant source of worry to Charters and Steadman. Bartleet’s Easy Day. Bartlett has had an easy day.i None of his opponents extended him. Griffiths has also won his way through the day’s rounds without much difficulty. Steadman’s Surprise. Steadman, an old Palmerstonian and now of Auckland, brought off a surprise victory over the veteran Lampe. The Wanganui man was outgeneral led and outplayed in most departments ot the game, of which the score, (> 4. 7—o, is a fair indication of the respective merit, of the players. The Ladies. In the Ladies’ Singles, Misses Knight, Myers, Colveys and Mrs. Hetley won their games with ease, but not so Miss D Nicholls, who had to go very hard to defeat Miss M. Preedy, 6-4, 7—5. Misses Knight and Nicholls have won their first game in the Ladies Doubles against Misses Pharazyn and Duncan, while Mrs. Hetley and Miss Clark had no difficulty with Mi;s. Law and Miss Walker.
