MANAWATU v. AUCKLAND

COLTS

VISITORS IN GOOD POSITION

Palmerston North, January 7

A two-day match between Alanawatu and Auckland Colts’ touring team was commenced at the Sports Ground today. The wicket was good, and although the sky was very dull in the morning it cleared towards midday, and the sun shone brilliantly all the afternoon, making playing conditions very pleasant. At the drawing of stumps Manawatu’s first innings had closed at 198, while Auckland had lost four wickets for 189 runs.

Alanawatu were the first to bat. Leet and Ale Sweeney, opening to the bowling of Fraser and Bush, were early separated, Leet being bowled by Bush soon after he had secured a single. 6—l—l. McSweeney followed him soon after, Bush accepting a catch in the slips off Fraser, 16—2—5. Mullins and Spring brightened the play considerably and added 53 for the partnership, which was terminated by Spring being run out. 67—3—18. Day came in to partner Mullins, but soon after Day’s advent Mullins, who had knocked up top score for his side by forceful cricket, was caught by Bush off Langridge in the slip's. 70—4—43. Day’s _ only scoring stroke was a boundary hit, soon after which Langridge yorked him. 74—5—4. McVicar was caught by Whitelaw off Fraser just as he appeared to be getting into his stride. O’Keefe also failed to stay long, Langridge getting an l.b.w. decision against him after he had scored a single and a three. 97— 7—4. Black was not given an opportunity to open his account, but Fletcher and Didsbury made a good eighth wicket stand, their association bringing in 95 runs, inclusive of extras, Both batsmen scored with a variety of strokes. Fletcher appeared good for more runs when Tilliek was bowled by Fraser, and the innings clsed at 198, with Fletcher 41 not out. The innings occupied nearly four hours.

Auckland commenced their strike after the afternoon tea adjournment. Whitelaw and Gee facing AlcVicar and Didsbury. The runs began to come in steadily, and the score rose to 70 before Tilliek, who had been put on to bowl, took Gee’s leg pin with a full toss. 70—1—27. Alonteitli added five singles before Day took n good catch at leg off Ale Sweeney. 94—2—5. The professional, Langridge, was also dismissed very cheaply. 'McSweeney tempted him with a delivery which was brilliantly taken by Black well out at square leg. 98—3— 2. Whitelaw and Butler found the bowling to their liking, and gave plenty of leather chasing. Whitelaw was playing soundly, and though it would be incorrect to say that he gave no chances, he fully earned the 99 runs which stood to bis credit when stumps were drawn at 6.30, after Butler had been ruled l.b.w.
