THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Acceptances for the first clay's events at the summer meeting of (lie Wellington Racing Club will close on Friday, at 9 p.m.

Acceptances for all first day’s events at the annual meeting of the Foxton Facing Club will close on Friday, at 8 p.m. Nominations for all races at (be summer meeting of the Egniont Racing Club, to bo hold on Thursday and Saturday, February 2 ami 4, will close on Friday, at 8.:#0 p.m.

Tresham and Royal Picture have left Treuthani, and have gone up to Hastings, where they will be trained in future by T. F. Quinlivan.

Lausanne has lately been showing signs of tenderness, apd he will take a lot of care to keep him going while the tracks are hard. Lausanne has now come "right,” and in his present condition is a possibility in any company.

Te Mouanui, after a. brief let-up on his return to New Plymouth from Ellerslie, was re-shod last week, and commenced wprk again on tho leach on Saturday. It is not anticipated that his soreness will develop seriously.

The death of Royal Feast ,who dropped dead while exercising on the tracks at Melbourne (Williamstown) last week, removes one of Australia's most prominent horses. Loyal Feast, who was by King Offa —Bun Feast, last season created a two-year-old stake-winning record of £13,119, beating Heroic’s previous best. Great things were expected of him this season as a three-year-old. but he was unable to be trained, ami now he has gone for all time. New Zealanders who saw Royal Feast in Sydney last season were greatly impressed with him. He was an exceptionally big toll.

R. Morris, the rider of Spode, in the County Handicap, the opening event at Reefton on Saturday, was disqualified for three months for interference with King Cheops.

According to "Sentinel,” more judiciously handled, John Bradbury would have made it harder for Queen Balboa, and Celerity II on tho concluding day at Invercargill. There are stages in a race where, a little "nursing” means a big factor in success.

Considering the quality of tho lightweight, Bright Glow, I’iuthair was kept too far away from the leaders in the Stratford Cup (says a Taranaki writer). She finished on remarkably well in fourth, place, but her run was much too late. Favoured with a particularly good run next to tho rails in the Malone Memorial on the second day. Piuthair ran on well enough to hold off llipo and Yoma, both of which may possibly have beaten the winner had they been lucky enough to secure as good a passage.

Mr. W. K. Kemball was a generous client of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club in connection with the New Year meeting, as he had nine horses at the fixture. and ho also had another ono nominated, Spearmiss, who, although at Hastings, was not produced. It is satisfactory to be able to record the fact that Mr. Kemball won stake money amounting to <£4-02 10s.

Although it. was considered inadvisable to race Footfall at Ellerslie after the first day, when he contested the Auckland Cup, there is nothing seriously amiss with him, and ho may be a starter in tho Wellington Cup, at which meeting ho will have Paperchase and Starflight as mates.

R. IV. King, who has been racing in Sydney for some time, has arrived back at Riccarton with Singlespear, by Greyspear from Single Rose. He was a winner in Australia lust before his return io the Dominion., but failed to show up in his only start at Ellerslie.

The inquiry into tho Nohra case was concluded at Greymouth last week. A few weeks ago Joseph Nohra was disqualified for two years for attempting to bribe R. McLennan (who was in charge of Moorland) and D. Cotton (jockey), in connection with the running of Moorland at Groymouth in December, 192 G. At the inquiry McLennan and Cotton were disqualified for a month for non-attendance. Tho hearing of the case against them was heard last week, and after ’evidence the charges against them were dismissed.

Countersign and her stable mate, Rotor, raced very disappointingly on the southern holiday circuit. They were responsible for some good work before they .left home, but did not reproduce it on the trip. The pair claim engagements at Trentham.

G. Reid took a team of four down to Taranaki from Te Arolia, and three wins and a number of minor placings came his way. Ono of the team, Marble King, annexed a double at Stratford and his success was well anticipated by tho stable. Town Bird was very consistent, scoring one win and three seconds in four starts. Marble King is engaged at tho Wellington meeting. Tho two-yoar-old Silver Paper looks in the best of health at present (says the Christchurch writer “Argus”). Ho was confined to useful tasks during E. •Scoullar’s absence in the south, during the holidays; but he showed on Saturday morning that he was all right by reeling off half a mile in brilliant fashion. Silver Paper sohuld earn some money at Trentham.

Yoraa ran two good races at the recent Stratford meeting, but was not able to return a dividend. As he is on the improve ho should again strip at his best about the time of the Egmont meeting.

The long straight at Stratford, with an up grade, is a severe test to a competitor with much weight in the saddle. Even good and proved stayers like Piutliair mnd Yoma were tiring in their races.

Tho meetings held in Taranaki during the recent holiday period revealed a number of good ''hacks.” Among the number coming under this heading are Bright Glow, Royal Acre, Scastar and Gold Dawn, and this quartet should secure further successes.

Silver Coot sprinted five furlongs in fine style at Riccarton on Saturday morning. He looks in great order and ho only requires to repeat his track form to win a race very soon.

Several members of Cults Brothers team, with engagements at Trentham, were allowed to stride along treely in smart work on Saturday morning. Sudden Storm, Quarterdeck, Sky Quest, Wild Work, Pull Feather and Impertinence have all done well lately, and they should assist to make a useful contingent for Wellington.

Llanore, who showed much promise m her two starts at the Munawatu meeting, got off badly each day at Stratford, but over the concluding stages of her race was running on better than most of her opponents.

Phoenix Park, bred at Okawa by Mr. T. H. Lowry, came to light at the end of last month in Western Australia, whore he won tho Perth Cup, two miles, tlie winner’s portion coming to 1750 sovs. and a trophy. Plioenix Park is a six-year-old gelding by Kilbronoy—En Parole, who is a full-sister to Bobnkoft, and is consequently a half-brother to Great Charter. While racing in Australia last season Phoenix Park was once successful. This occurred when ho won tho February Handicap, 1 mi 10.3 furlongs, tho winner’s share coming to Zeifil). His other dozen efforts produced a, third placing, for which bis owner received Jt)ls. Phoenix Park showed fair form in New Zealand, one of his successes being in the W.R.C. Pearce Handicap.

WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING HANDICAPS DECLARED The following weights have been declared by Mr. 11. Coyle for the first, day of I lie Wellington Facing Club’s summer meeting on January 21:—

THE CUP AND TELEGRAPH HANDICAP PROSPECTS REVIEWED The first thought that occurs on seeing the handicaps for the Wellington Cup is that the handicapper in placing the top weights at 9.8 has not been hard on them, but it is as well to remember that it is a weight that has never been carried to victory sinco the club shifted its headquarters’ to Trentham, Achilles, 9.4, in 1907, being tho only nine-stoner to score. In giving Star Stranger tho same weight as the triple cup winner Rapier, Mr. Coyle differs from the Auckland handicapper, who made Rapier give Star Stranger 71b. in the A.R.C. Handicap on New Year's Day. Star Stranger won and Rapier was a non-starter, but ho won over tho same distance on the concluding day. His task was not so difficult as that of Star Stranger, as ho had only two opponents. Footfall failed in the Auckland Cup, and as ho has not been himself for some time he is not likely to find a great deal of favour Manawatu form usually has a decided bearing on the Wellington Cup, and Piuthair with 8.5, which is 51b. less than she carried when she ran third in the Manawatu Cup, will have to be labelled extremely likely. She won at Stratford on the second day, and if in her best form she would be the pick of the handicap. Mask had 8.4 when Star . Stranger won with 9.1 at Ellerslie, and as B. H. Morris considers his mount very unlucky to be interfered with in that race, Mask must be considered. He carried 8.4 when he won on tho concluding day. Set Sail won at Invercargill under 9.6, Loughrea ran second with 9.3, and getting 8.5 in the Wellington Cup, won. Set Sail, with 8.3, must be entitled to great respect, although on autumn form, when Piuthair beat her, conceding 161 b., Mr. McKenzie’s mare has the advantage. Hyanna is not overburdened with 8.2, but the question with him will bo seasoned condition. He has had only one race. Three-year-olds have to be extra good to win the Wellington Cup. Rapine was the last with 7.12, and incidentally the only one of that age who has won at Trentham. Laughing Prince has 7.13, and that will keep him busy. Lady Desmond meets Piijthair on 91b. worse terms for the Manawatu Cup win. Lady Desmond has so far done all that has been asked of her, and a Wellington Cup is decidedly not beyond her. Joy Bird meets her on 81b. better terms, but still Lady Desmond looks the better prospect. Battlement is a hard horse of whom to form an opinion. If he galloped generously he would bo a possibility. Bright Glow, Papatu, Oratrix, and Celerity II will claim attention. It will be noted that there is a good proportion of mares in the list and they have a habit of racing trickily until tho autumn, although they have won their share of Wellington Cups. It is a long way yet to race day, but at first glance one would expect Piutliair and Lady Desmond to’ keep the two top-weights busy with Set Sail, Mask and Oratrix next best.

Weight in the sprint event is not such a serious consideration ns in the Cup, although lightly weighted horses with plenty of pace have always been hard to beat in tho Telegraph Handicap. Aussie is not at all badly treated at 9.7, but at 21b. advantage Reremoana is .preferred. Last year he failed under 9.12. The top pair look safe to bold the 8-stono lot down to Booster, but Money Order, 8.3, is a great possibility, The Auckland racing will improve him. Shirley, if herself, will be hard to beat at 8.3. .Toy King and Gascony read well nt 8.2. Paperehase, Lausanne, and Lady Limond appeal most of the lightweights. Reremoana, Aussie, Money Order, Gascony, and Lausanne find most favour at present.

REEFTON MEETING bronstell wins cup by Telegraph.—Press Association. Reefton, January 7. For the second day of the Reefton Jockey Club jubilee meeting there was tine weather, a large attendance, and tho course was in good order. It is reported that the imported mare Celerity II developed trouble in one of her knees after her racing at Invercargill, and she may require a long spell.
