COMIC OPERA SEASON

“PRINCESS IDA” In “Princess Ida,” presented at the Grand Opera House last evening, Uic lamous co Ha borate urs, Gilbert and SuL livan, take for the basis of their plot tlio idea of au Adamless Eden. Needless to say, human nature proves too much for the ideals of Princess Ida olid lier associates, aud the whole theory breaks down in the characteristic Gilbertian way. The opera was admirably presented by the J. C. Williamson Company, and was highly appreciated for its wealth of captivating inusw und inimitable comedy. “Princess Ida is less widely known than the others of the imperishable series, but that is perhaps because it has been less frequently presented. It is certainly deserving of more general familiarity. Aliss Strella Wilson made a captivating Princess, and was ably supported by Mr. James Hay, as Hilarion, her lover. Messrs. Chas. Walcnn as King Gama), aud John Ralston (King Hildebrand) were the principal fun-makers, Afisses TVimtred Williamson (Lady Blanche), Patti Russell (Lady Psycho), appeared in original roles. Other important characters were portrayed bv Alessrs. Leo Darnton Cyril), Lance' Fairfax (Florian). Bernard Manning (Aras), and John Byrne Scynthius). “THE GONDOLIERS.” Foe the final production of what lias been one of the most enjoyable repertoires of Gilbert and Sullivan operas ever presented iu New Zealand, “The Gondoliers,” one of the most favoured of the series, will be staged. Two farewell performances will be given to-day—after-noon and night. There are many beiiutiful solos, duets, and concerted pieces in this attractive conception. A wonderful charm there is in this offering, and excerpts from the opera are, perhaps, heard more frequently than selections form any of the others. There is a peculiarly attractive lilt and a subtle beauty in the music, and there ai;e many charming scenes. The romantic story of the prince and the humble gondolier, and the well-conceived plot associated with this clever production, will hold the interest, and it stands out as one of tho most brilliant and enjoyable of the series. That there will be a large audience to witness the farewell performance is assured. The cast is a particularly strong one, as will be generally admitted when it is seen that the principal characters are allotted as follow:— Gianetta, Strella Wilson; Alarco, Jas. May; The Duchess. Winifred Williamson ; Duke of Plaza-Toro, Chas. Walenn; Luiz, Leo Darnton; Casilda. Patti Russell: Tessa, Mabel Gibson; Guiseppe, Lance Fairfax ; The Inquisitor, John Ralston ; Inez, Effie Armstrong; Antonio, Gordon Ramsay. The very efficient orchestra is under the conductorsliip of Mr. Gustave Slapoffski. and tho opera will be presented ivith all detail.
