MAYOR OF GOULBURN

A VISITOR TO WELLINGTON CITY WITHOUT TRAMS

A visitor to Wellington at present is Aiderman A. Goodhew, Mayor of Goulburn, New South Wales. Before settling in Goulburn, where he is now engaged extensively in horticulture, Aiderman Goodhew sailed the seas, and commanded vessels of the Loch Line of sailing ships, and subsequently steamers of the A.U.S.N. Co. on the Australian coast. Aiderman Goodhew mentioned, as an interesting coincidence, that his predecessor in the Mayoral Chair at Goulburn was also a sea captain, who was formerly a commander in the 8.1. Line. The new Federal capital of Canberra is 64 miles from Goulburn, and Aiderman Goodhew, who pays frequent visits to the new city, says it is making great progress. Goulburn itself has a population of 16,000, but is doing without electric trams, although it has a fine municipal sendee supplying electricity for power and lighting. The city recognises that the motor-bus has come to stay, and the Mavor affirmed that the city had not spent one penny on electric trams. “And Ido not think it ever will,” he added A.lderman Goodhew stated that the change of Government in New South Wales was already making for political stability, and mentioned that during the recent campaign Mr. Bruce (Prime Minister of the Commonwealth) spoke at Goulburn, the only place in the State where he gave an address. The output of apples and pears this season from the Goulburn district is estimated to be 200,000 cases. The present is Alderman Goodhew s first visit to New Zealand, and on account of pressing public engagements he leaves on the return journey next week.
