PAHIATUA NOTES

Pahiatua, January 5. The funeral of the late Mr. Francis Cleghorn Dempsey took place on Tuesday, and was largely attended. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. G. W. Fenwick, and the pall bearel’s were Messrs. A. Bush, W. Tapp, V. Scott, E. Brady, J. 11. Wakeman, W. Common. There were many beautiful floral tributes. The finals of the annual tournament of the Pahiatua Tennis Club are being played this morning. The entries cons'titute a record, and there are many outside competitors. The courts are in excellent order. Mr. W. Price, of Wanganui, has been appointed starter for the Pahiatua races, to be held on February 1 and 2. A prominent settler of the district, Mr. Neil Small. Jun., passed away at his residence. Hukanui, yesterday. The deceased gentleman, who was very highly esteemed, was a leading official of the Pahiatua A. and P. Association, and an executive officer of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, of which organisation he had been president for a number of years. The late Mr. Small, who was 57 years of age, leaves a widow and several children. Further results in the singles bowl-' ing championslnp are as follow: Walsh beat Manson, Chatwin beat Groves, Walsh beat Groves. Mr. O. Johnson, managing-editor of the local paper, is spending his annual holiday in Auckland. Mr. W. H. Murch, a well-known local business man, who has been on the sick list for the past month, is now an inmate of the Taraciia Private Hospital. Mr. G. F. Gelderd. who has been secretary of the local Foresters’ Lodge for over thirty years, is indisposed.
