INCREASING TONNAGE STRIKING DEVELOPMENT OF MOTOR VESSELS London, October 11. Lloyd’s return of shipbuilding for the three months ended September 30 shows a total world tonnage constructing of 3,074,000, which, though an increase on the previous quarter, is still 373,000 tons below the highest prewar record in 1913. The tonnage constructing in Britain and Ireland is 1,536,000, which is 761, 000 more than a year ago, and the highest since September, 1922, but still 354,000 below the average of 1913. The tonnage commenced in Britain has decreased from 437,000 to 370,000, but the tonnage launched is 355,000, an increase of 86,000 tons. The return reflects the striking development of motor-ships, of which 1,589,000 tons are being constructed throughout the world, compared with steam 1,486,000 tons. Tn Britain and Ireland the motor-ships constructing represent 74 per cent, of the steam tonnage.
