BOWLS

SEASON OPENED IN RAIN

PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB

' Palmerston North, October 12. Despite the fact that thick rain had been tailing sinco the early morning, there was a good gathering of members and visitors at the opening of the season of the Palmerston North Bowling Club to-day. Weather conditions made bowling out of the question, but nevertheless a pleasant time was spent by those who attended, aud afternoon tea was served by the ladies. The president of the club (Mr. W. B. Crump) extended a hearty welcome to both members and visitors. lie pointed out that the Palmerston North club was in a very good, position, and that its membership was increasing, year by year. Last year, said the president, there was a membership of 55, but now he was pleased to say that the club possessed 94 members. There were quite a number of new members this year, and Mr. Crump extended to these a very hearty welcome. It was the aim of the club, continued the president, to cater for the colts as. much as possible. Last year many visits had been paid to.other clubs, and on every occasion one or two colts had 1 been included in the teams. They had done very well indeed, having followed the example of members generally, who had always stood behind tho committee in its undertakings as one man.

The Manawatu Bowling Centre, said Mr. Crump, did not look with favour on gala days, but the committee would use its best endeavours to arrange as many visits as possible to other clubs. This, he thought, was an even better way of obtaining enjoyment from the game than was the old method of having gala days from time to time. Three cheers were then given for the visitors, and the green was officially opened by Mrs. Crump’s throwing the first kitty and bowling the first bowl.
