SUNDAY TRADING

OLD OFFENDER FINED Palmerston North, October 10. "This is a man who has been systematically practising Sunday trading,” remarked Senior-Sergeant O’Grady in the Magtstrate’s Court to-day, when Harry Byers was charged with having sold goods on a Sunday. “Defendant has been fined several times,” continued the sergeant, “but since tliis last offence he lias promised to give up his Sunday trading. He has certainly been given to understand that he cannot go on with it, and since then things have been much better.”

Evidence was given by a constable, who related how he had accosted three toys on a recent Sunday, and had been told by them that they had been sold sweets' by defendant. On .speaking to defendant in regard to the matter, the constable was told that the sweets had been given to the boys, but the toys themselves said that they had bought them. Defendant was convicted and fined £5, and costs amounted to 10s.
