meeting of executive.
The executive of the Navy League met yesterday afternoon. There were present Sir Alexander Roberts (chairman), Mrs. Darling, Miss Cable, Messrs. Fowler, McKenzie, Irwin, Anderson, Walker, Captain Olphert, and Commander Varian. An apology for absence was received from Sir Douglas McLean. The meeting decided to ask his Ex-, cellency the Governor-General, when on his visit to Palmerston, North,, to lay the foundation stone of a new girls’ school, to present a flag, to-the Huntly school, which has a hundred per cent. • membership of the League. ' The Education Committee reported that it had decided not to appoint a schoolmaster as a judge for the Palmer Prizes at the Masterton competitions as has been done formerly. Mention was made of the coming Trafalgar Day entertainment on October 21, when a New Zealand GovernM: 1 ment publicity film will be shown in the Town Hall, the Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson being pres- ' ; ent. His Excellency will address the gathering. > Mr. R. Darroch reported on a recent visit of his to Patea and Hawera. He said that he had been much impressed by the great loyalty to the League of the children ,in that district. He had visited schools at Patea, Whenuakura, Karamea, Manutahi, Alton, Harleyville, Hawera (High), and Tawhiti,.the total attendance at these schools being about 900. It was decided to send letters of thanks to those person? in the district who had been such a help to Mr. Darroch in his visit l The question of forming a branch at Nelson was discussed. Mr. ,Walker pointed out that children in Nelson had perforce to belong to Wellington branches. In replying, Mr. Darroch said that he expected to make a trip to that district shortly in order to address the- schools and establish a ' branch. ‘ / . , .- ,
