PETONE SHOPPING WEEK

COMMITTEES APPOINTED. Much enthusiasm was displayed by the shopkeepers present at the meeting called last night to make arrangements for the‘shopping week to be held at Petone. There was a , large attendance and Mr. J. M. Pearson was in the chair. ' The chairman, in making a report; of the progress made since the last meeting, slated-that £215 had been promised already towards the object and .that there was more in sight. Practically every shopkeeper had entered into the scheme and there was no reason why a huge success should not be made of Petone’s first shopping week. He suggested the printing of 7000 booklets to be distributed over the whole of the Valley—from Upper Hutt to Kaiwarra, Eastbourne and Wainui. A suggestion by one shopkeeper that. free buses be run from the outlying districts was referred to the finance committee. Tile booklet will contain a large number o competitions, for which no entry fee will be charged. Mr. Pearson also outlined a scheme for- the opening ceremonies of the week. He suggested a pageant to bo held on theopening day, showing how Petone ■ has progressed since the arrival of the first white man. Confetti battles, balloon stunts, openair concerts, free dances, numberless compel it ioi'w, sports, etc., would term the source of attraction, and each shop window would be specialty dressed tor the occasion. It was proposed to illuminate the town from Cuba Street to the Gear Co.’s premises. ]t was decided to proceed ahead with the scheme, the period October 28 to November 5 being chosen. A grand bonfire and fireworks display will conclude (he week on November 5. The following convuitteo were elected: Finance and Advertising, Messra.
