At the annual meeting of the Carterton Tradesmen’s Association, Mr. G. Hughan presiding, the president’s report was adopted. It was decided that a holiday from 10 a.m. be observed on the People’s Day of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society’s show at Carterton, and to arrange the smoke concert to entertain exhibitors on the first night of the show. The election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr. G. Hughan; vice-president. Mr. W. Sorenson; executive, Messrs. R. J. Gayfer, W. J. Candy, E. H. Hawker, J. B. Lawrence, A. Phillpotts, J. A. Dudson, A. H) Krahagen, and P. F. Evans; auditor, Mr. H. D. Wallis; secretary, Mr. N. R. Armstrong. Mr. R. A. Pepperill, of the Carterton railway station staff, will leave on Monday on transfer to Napier. On Saturday he was met by his fellow workers and personal friends, and presented with three pieces of silver table plate. At a meeting of the Carterton Library Committee, Mr. J. W. Henderson presiding, the treasurer reported a credit balance of £23. The librarian reported that three new subscribers bad joined during the month, and three had left. Mr. and Mrs. T. Clarke, of Clarevill, have left for their new home at Seatoun. Prior to relinquishing his position as headmaster at the Clareville School, the scholars presented Mr Clarke with a clock. The members of the Golf Club also made a presentation to Mr. Clarke of a leather suitcase. At the annual meeting of the Carterton Prohibition League Mr. Duncan McGregor was elected president, Mr. C. E. Jones secretary and treasurer, Miss Tyler minute secretary, and all local heads of churches vice-presidents. The Rev. A. A. Armstrong, of. the N.Z. Alliance, addressed the meeting on preparation work for. the coming poll. It was decided to write to outside centres to ask them to appoint delegates to the Carterton League, and to support the holding of a sub-area convention at Masterton in November. Resolutions were carried directing attention to. the increase in criminal convictions in Ohinemuri following the return of the open bar, and urging Carterton citizens to vote for national prohibition; supporting the Alliance in urging the Government to introduce the promised Licensing Bill at an eariv date, so as to admit of its full discussion and passage this session; and that in view of the alarming increase of motor accidents, urges that in the interests of safetv all motor drivers should adopt the rule of Earl Russell, who declared : “Though ' am not a teetotaller ordinarily, when 1 drive T am absolutelv and completely teetotal, for I believe that is the only safe'way.” A sharn shock of earthouake was felt in the South Wairarapa at 3.14 o'clock on Saturday morning.
