Dannevirke, September 30. The natural increase in the population of Dannevirke registration district shows a lower rate both for the September quarter and the September month than ■ for the corresponding periods last year. For the quarter, 4-9 births were registered against 66 in 1926, and for the month the figures were respectively 13 and 25. Deaths also show a decrease, the figures for tlie respective quarters being 15 against 21, and for the month 4 against 9. Marriages, however, show an increase in both of the periods under review. 13 having been recorded in the quarter just ended against 9 in the 1926 period, and 2 last month against 1 in September, 1926.

A “Flag Bridge” afternoon in aid of the funds of the Rangatira Croquet Club was thoroughly successful. It was held iu the president’s (Mrs. Dawson) house, and attracted a largo attendance, over 70 ladies participating. The winners were Mesdames V. F. B. Rogers, A. McNiool and Pine. A putting competition was won by Mrs. G. L. Shaw after a tic with Mrs. Fowler. “Hunting” was annexed by Mrs. H. E. Reynolds, and a marquetry vase by Mrs. S. Macfarlane. The total number of insolvencies investigated this year is now 13. Last year that figure represented the total 'for tho whole year; Permits for only two new buildings wero issued by the Borough Council last month, tho amount represented for all tho permits, alterations, etc., included, being £3OOO.

Considerable interest was taken in a by-election held yesterday to fill three vacancies on the Dannevirke County Council caused by the resignation at last meeting of Councillors 11. Frederickson (Tiratu riding), James Miller (Te Rehunga), and James Powell (Norsewood). Mr. Fredericksen was re-elected by a majority of 23, Mr. James Miller by 101, and Mr J. Powell lost his seat by three votes only. Tho candidates opposing them were Messrs. R. Grigg. W. Bell (defeated), and A. B. Hansen, the last of whom on the present figures being elected. At tho annual meeting of the Dannevirke Horticultural Society the former officials were all re-elected. They are Sir George Hunter (patron), Mr.. G. ,1. E. Bickford (president). Messrs. R. F. Soundy and 11. Bamford (vice-presi-dents), Mr. P. V. Clark (honorary treasurer), and Mr H S. M. Quigley (honorary sec ret a ry).
