WINTER SHOW

TRAFFIC CONTROL COMMITTEES DECLINES TO I PAY The executive committee of the Wellington Show Association last night declined to agree to the request of the' City Council for a contribution towards the overtime paid to the traffic inspectors during the last Winter Show. Mr. R. H. Nimmo, who presided, said he could not see why the association should pay for those services. The council got revenue from the trams, and as they all paid rates for such services he did not J:hink they should contribute. Mr. J. L. Bruce moved that no action be taken, and this was seconded by Mr. F. G. Cray. The manager stated that the association was not legally bound to pay, but the council had requested a contribution, and it was a matter of policy. Mr. B. Thomas contended that the men were doing excellent service in regulating the traffic at. that time. Mr. S. Wilson said the council gained a great deal in tram and bus revenue, and should bear the expense. 'The chairman: If payment applies to traffic inspectors it should apply to the police, and we pay for that in our taxation.

Reference was made to the traffic control at Athletic Park but Mr. G. Mitchell remarked that the council had tremendous revenue from the rush traffic without extra expense, whereas at the show the services of the men were required every nifeht for a fortnight. Mr. Crav: Did we ask for them? Mr. Mitchell: No.

Mr. Cray: Our constitution will not allow us to pay for services which wo did not seek. The chairman said the City Council had intended to make a definite charge until he refused to recognise it. and they now asked for a contribution. The motion not to recognise any liability or to make any payment was carried.
