INCREASES IN WAGES GRANTED
CHRISTCHURCH MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES BENEFIT “WHERE IS THE MONEY TO COME FROM?” Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, September 13. When the Labour majority of the City Council sought approval to grant increases to certain of its employees last night, strong objection was voiced by representatives of the Citizens’ Association. “This is another part of the plan to give increased wages to all the City Council employees.” 1 “Trouble will be caused by paying council employees more wages than are paid to employees outside.” “Where is the money coming from?” “We cannot afford to increase wages at present!” These were some of the statements hurled at the Labour councillors. The council decided eventually to grant an increase of 2d. an hour to linesmen and their assistants in the employ of the municipal electricity department, and also to grant the men a week’s holiday each year. All . the council’s drivers, with the exception of drivers of sanitary carts, are to receive an increase of about 3s. 7d. per week. The drivers of sanitary carts are to receive an increase of 2s. per week. It is also proposed to give the drivers a week’s holiday each year on full pay.
