LITHUANIAN REVOLT
QUICKLY SUPPRESSED GOVERNMENT’S PROMPT ACTION ' BY TELEGEAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Copyright. Riga, September 11. A Lithuanian revolt was. organised by the Leltista with the object of overthrowing 1 the Government. The town of Taurouggen, between Riga and Tilsit, and other small towns and villages, for fourteen hours were in the hands of the rebels, who disarmed the police, occupied the barracks and stations, and summoned other towns to join them. The Government proclaimed a state of war, rushed troops from Kovno and Memel, instituted a Press censorship, and by prompt action suppressed the revolt. It is reported that many were killed and wounded. The leader, Hajus, who was recently expelled from the army, and other prominent insurgents, escaped. BANK RAIDED London, September 11. The Riga correspondent of “The Times” says that with sixty supporters the Lithuanian former Staff officer Captain Hajus, recently cashiered on account of Communist activities, made a surprise attack on the police headquarters at Taurage, liberating prisoners, who assisted him to raid the local bank, seizing bundles of Lithuanian and American notes. The raiders entered other Government establishments, but dispersed on the arrival of the military from Memel. Shots were exchanged and two raiders killed. —“The Times.”
