WANGANUI ITEMS

Wanganui, September 12.

Cooperative dairving in the Wanganui district is becoming more and more highly organised as years pass. In various branches of the business improvements have been made, the system of cream-carting being one of the factories’ activities which have been greatly extended of late. Every day lorries owned by the various dairy companies travel over a network of roads and collect the cream from the farms, pushing deep into the hinterland, as if anxious that none of the produce of the land should be overlooked. The lorries consequently arrive at the factoties with heavy loads, and one “doubledecker” running to the Okoia factory brought in a grand total of 101 full cans from the Waverley-Waitotara area on one trip last week. In his report to the Waitotara County Council to-dav, the engineer (Mr. T. Dix) stated that, after the recent rains, there were numerous small slips on most roads. The roads nearest the sea coast suffered more than those on the backblocks. It, is surprising the number of underslips that have occurred. The heavy fall of snow of a few months ago is primarily responsible for them. Unfortunately in most cases it is impossible to prevent further subsidence, owing to the difficulty in tapping the spring causing the’ underslips. Mr. T. Dix was granted leave at today’s meeting of the Waitotara County Council, to attend a conference of engineers to be held at Napier on September 22. Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., is expected to return to Wanganui in two weeks’ time, assuming that the Napier Harbour Commission does not sit longer than anticipated. On Saturday a pigeon race from Feilding was held by the Wanganui Central' Club, and it is stated that good competition was experienced, although weather conditions were unfavourable. The bird entered _by M Kirkness won the event, flying 1174 yards a minute, and the entres bv L Williams and N McDonald flew 1171 and 1164 yards a minute resnectivelv. An un-river settler wa'ted on the Waitotara Conntv Council this mornin" and requested the council’s assistance in securin' l a punt for his property He pointed out that he had naid rates on his nronertv for the nast thirty years, but had no road access to his land Tt was decided to accede to In's renuest. While the construction of houses in Waho-anui at present is onlv _ moderate, shons and hoardirms continue to innear steadily. An instance of this is seen in Dublin Street, where several new business premises are nearin" comnletion and another row of sum boards has been erected. A severe westerly gale made out-of-doors conrlib'ons verv iinnlensn”t in Wan"an"i vesterdav, and considerable dnm.iw has been caused in orchards in various parts of +be dtv, where fruit frees are in full bloom. .
