RULED OUT

' BIBLE IN SCHOOLS MOTION SCHOOL COMMITTEES’ POSITION ' Last night a decision reached bv the Wellington School Committees' Association at the preceding meeting, referring the Bible in schools issue to a vigilance committee, was ruled to bo out of order. Tills decision was made by the chairman (Mr. A. Parlane) when a notice of motion by Mr. W. Stone raised the point, contending that the question had been adjourned sine die by a previous meeting, with the proviso that 48 hours* notice should be given to bring the question up again; also that it was inimical to the best interests of the associations to accept motions to topics of such a controversial nature without due notice being obtained to allow them to be placed on the order paper. It was quite true that at a meeting held on September 13, 1926, the question had been adjourned sine die, with a proviso that 48 hours’ notice should be ■ given, said the chairman. The standing orders, however, provided that ten clear days’ notice should have been given, and this must stand unless the leave of the meeting to introduce a motion and suspend the standing orders were granted. Therefore he was obliged, very reluctantly, to rule that those proceedings at the last meeting were out of order and that the record of them should be expunged from the minutes. , ~ , ~ Mr. L. Hennessy moved that rhe chairman’s ruling should be agreed with, and Mr. Parlane left the chair, winch was taken by Mr. C. H. Nicholls. Mr. M. Sadd seconded this! motion Rule 20 stated that notices of motion should be sewt to the secretary ten clear days before a meeting, said Mr. Parlane. Rule 21 said that the permission of the meeting might be obtained for the suspension of the standing orders. This had not been done; 5t wag probably his fault, and it was an omission for which, ho was truly S< Tha motion that the chairman’s ruling should bo disagreed with was defeated by 12 votes to 6.
