HISTORIC MAORI WAR CANOE
RELAUNCHED AFTER THIRTY YEARS Dominion Special. Wanganui, January 22. Tlie canoe Mangaone, which has just been relaunched at Putiki, has an eventful past. She has been lodged at Putiki for the reason that Putiki is neutral ground, and the canoe is the subject of contested ownership. Tlie canoe is a beautiful model, and it is hoped to be able to raise the funds necessary to provide a proper shelter for it, and a slipway leading to and from the river. An interesting ceremony took place at Putiki yestrday, when the old war canoe was relaunched after being above water for nearly thirty years. The Mangaone took part in the regatta today!, and notwithstanding the great lapse of time during which . the old canoe has rested beside Putiki Wharepuni, it was found that she was quite seaworthy. The relaunching was carried out to the accompaniment of due form and ceremony as befitted the occasion.
