MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL

WEDNESDAY FIXED AS HALF HOLIDAY. A meeting of the Makura County Council was held yesterday, the chairman (Councillor E. Windley) presiding. There were also present: Councillors D. Sloane, R. G. Mcxtcd, L. C. Bryant H. •Monaghan, M. Monk, and the clerk (Mr. W. L. Beech). , , The Wellington Education .Board wrote stating that somewhat effective improvements of the Johnsonville school playground were being effected by the coinmitteo, assisted bv the board, in order to provide for better playing facilities. Among the works being undertaken was the filling and levelling out of the lower portion at the intersection of Drake ami Wakefield Streets. In order to complete the work it was necessary that a sump be constructed to convey the storm water to the storm wafer drainage. Ihe board would be obliged ii the council would give the necessary instructions tor the construction of the sump. , The clerk stated that ho had advised the board that the council could not see its wav clear to contribute further towards the cost of the sump, having a - ready contributed, inasmuch as the culvert was reconstructed of much larger dimensions than formerly, in order to deal with the rapid concentration ot flood waters caused by the works which have been carried out on the school ar, The council approved the clerk’s n °The' Titahi Bay Progressive Association wrote suggesting that the formation of the main road should be widened about two feet on each side. It was also felt that the road should be widened at some of the bends. lhe association also stressed the need for more conveniences at Tilnhi Bay. The matter was referred to the finance and works committee. , The chairman stated that he had Received a complaint about the tip on the Hutt Road, the smell from the burning of the rubbish and Offal deposited .being decidedly disagreeable to Tesidents in the eicinitv. It was decided to draw the attention of the health authorities to the matter, with a view to an improvement.
