IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE

: - HOPES OF MAKING GOOD Dominion Special. Auckland, December 24. A total of 203 assisted immigrants arrived by the Rotorua from London today and will spend their first Christmas in the land of their adoption. The thought of Christinas . away from all their friends tinged their outlook with a little sadness, but nevertheless one and all were looking forward to making good during the coming year. On the voyage from London, the party was kept happy by many social activities, such as fancy dress dances, cards, and deck games. The health of the immigrants was excellent, and the majority of the men were of a type fit for strenuous work. While most of the new-comers intend to settle on the land, all trades are represented. Included are a few miners, who, finding conditions in England impossible, decided to try their luck in New Zealand mines. Three or four of them are bound for Westport. “If I had remained in England, 1 do not see how 1 could have kept the alive,” said the father of a family bf four children. “Before leaving England, I was out of work for four months and prospects were black. Provided there is work to do, I am as good as the next man. Another problem to be faced in England is the proper education of my children. I feel that in this democratic country of New Zealand, they will get a good chance and have equal opportunities of making good. ” ■
