FIRE NEAR CARTERTON
FARMHOUSE DESTROYED. A seven-roomed dwelling on a farm at Waikakeke, near Carterton, owned and occupied by Mr W. J. Fitzgerald, was totally destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve. Air. and Airs. Fitzgerald were in Greytown during the evening, returning home at about 11 p.m. They left half an hour later to 4 attend a church service at Carterton. Their son, who had been away from the bouse during the evening, returned shortly after his parents’ departure. He went to bed, and was awakened shortly before midnight by suffocating smoke. He had only time to escape with what articles he could find close at hand. Nothing was saved from the building, which was insured for £7OO, its contents being insured to the extent of £2OO. It is estimated that the losses suffered by the, owners of the building will be considerably more than these amounts.
