THEFT FROM REGISTERED LETTER
Dominion Special. Dunedin, December 21. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. J. R. Bartholomew,•S.M., a youth of 17 years was charged with having stolen from a postal packet a £1 note, the property of the Postmaster-General. Leslie Smith, inquiry officer attached to the Chief Post Office, Dunedin, said the accused was a Postal official, and had been in the service about twelve months. Witness interviewed him on December 7 with reference to some money missing from a registered letter addressed to a Mrs. Wilson. Ac-, cused made a statement, admitting that he bad opened the letter and abstracted one of the five bank , notes in it, resealing the letter and delivering it to the addressee. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed. The Magistrate said that as the lad was only just over juvenile age, he would order the name to be suppressed until the matter was dealt with by the Supreme Court.
