FREEZING WORKS TROUBLE
MANY APPLICANTS AT GISBORNE WORKS. BY Telegraph.—Press association. Gisborne, December 6. The members of the Freezers’ Union have decided to accept employment, and a large number of men applied at both works this morning. Only a small number of these were required, as many of the volunteer workers had elected to remain for the season, and, having applied for membership of the union, were kept on. Only twentyfive out of the seventy applicants got positions at the Kaiti works. VOLUNTEERS RETAINED AT LONGBURN. Palmerston North, December 6. Now that the strike is over there is no lack of labour in any department of the Longburn freezing works, which to-morrow will commence killing operations with union labour in addition to the volunteer workers already employed. It is stated that the butchers will comprise nine members of the original union and about fifteen volunteers, whose services it is intended shall be retained throughout the season.
