FATAL ATTEMPT TO FORD RIVER
MAN AND HORSES DROWNED BY Telegraph.—press association. Taumarunui, December 6. Thomas McKenna, a single man, aged 30 years, was drowned in the Wanganui River this morning. He was riding in a dray, pulled by three horses, and driven and owned by \v. W. Webster, across the river to view the metal deposits on the opposite side, preparatory to working them tomorrow. The horses got into deep water, and were drowned. Webster and McKenna struck out for the shore. The' former landed in an exhausted condition, but McKenna suddenly disappeared when he appeared to be swimming strongly. The body has not yet been recovered. Webster values the horses at £lOO.
