CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS YESTERDAY’S PLAY “Dominion” Special. Palmerston North, September 9. The annual championship tournament of the Manawatu Golf Club was continued at the Hokowhitu links today, when favourable weather conditions prevailed, for the deciding of the first rounds of the championship and of the Hokowhitu handicap. A feature of the first round of the championship was the contest between A. H. Ekstedt and O. H. Druce, the Manawatu champion winning one up at the nineteenth. The boy champion, Louis Seifert, jnr., was matched against a formidable opponent in the first round in L. Quinn, the ex-New Zealand champion, Quinn winning, 7 up and 5. The results of the first round of the championship are as follow:—J. C. Bidwill defeated H. P. Dale, 2 and 1; R. W. Cumberworth defeated J. E. Lewis, 2 up; L. Quinn defeated LSeifert, jnr., 7 and a; W. H. Macmillan defeated H. L. Young, 2 and I; D. C. Collins defeated L. Gorton, ■1 and 3; L- Seifert defeated B. Bendall, 3 and 2; H. Crosse defeated E. G. Sim, 4 and 3; A. E. Ekstedt defeated O. H. Druce, 1 up at the 19th. Following are the results of the first round of the Hokowhitu handicap:— E. Fair (8) defeated W. A. Keeling (7), 1 up; E. Clark (8) defeated F. S. Sherriffs (4) ; B. G. Rhind (6) defeated R. G. Moore (4), 2 and 1; J. G. Swainson (6)’ defeated C. Louisson (5) ; H. G. Davies (4) defeated W. L. Fitzherbert (4), 3 and 1; P. D. Daniell (3) defeated N. A. Vercoe (3), 3 and 1; R. P- Abraham (5) defeated H. G. Bagnall (5) ; S. Crosse (8) defeated T. Stubbs (6). In the second round of tho championship W. H. McMillan ran L. Quinn, ex-New Zealand champion, to the nineteenth hole before being beaten. An interesting incident occurred at the eighteenth, where Quinn missed a putt of less than a foot to win. Although over the extra distance, he gamed the requisite margin. It. Crosse, of Napier, made a return to form by defeating D. C. Collins, who shares with Bidwiil the Wairarapa leadership. The second round resulted: —J. C. Bidwill defeated IL J. Camberwell, 2 up; H. Crosse defeated D. C. Collins. 2 and 1; A. E. Ekstedt defeated L. Seifert, 5 and 4; L Quinn defeated W. 11. McMillan, 1 up at the nineteenth. This morning’s bogey handicap was won by Edison Clarke (S). 5 up, secopd place being won by F. Douglas (9)»,4 up. The best other cards handed in were: 11. The semi-finals in the cruet events or the tournament will commence at 10.15 and 10-25 to-morrow morning, the championship commencing first. The final will commence at 1.30 and 1.40 p.m. in the championship event and Hokowhitu Handicap respectively.
