ITEMS FROM ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of the Internal Affairs Department, which was submitted to Parliament on Thursday, mentions, among other things, that only one new borough has been constituted—Upper Hutt. A proposal to form Hikurangi Town District into a borough was defeated at an electors poll. ‘ The general question of river control still engages attention. Matters affecting local bodies will no longer be dealt with in the "washing-up” Bill, but in a separate measure, termed the Local Legislation Bill. During the vear 1136 licenses were issued to land agents. There are now 44 fire districts, Pahiatua, Onehunga, Wairoa, and Pukekolie having been added during the vear. The testing of town gas for calorific value has been recently undertaken. Regular tests of the gas supplied in Auckland. Wellington and Christchurch were made, and lists will be commenced shortlv in Dunedin. A total of 3,863 passports were issued in New Zealand during the year ending March 31. Visas arc no longer required for entry into New Zealand of nationals from Belgium, Denmark, Holland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
