A fire in Gee’s buildings, Redfern, Sydney’, occupied by a number of firms, caused damage estimated at £15,000. Underwriting is proceeding in London of a Union of South Africa four million loan at 5 per cent., redeemable in 1945 or 1975. The issue price is £lOO. Owing to the incidence of the Workers’ Compensation Act, it is announced in Sydney that coastal freight rates wete increased as from yesterday. On her return to Paris, Mdlle. Lenglen informed the Press that she had been extremely well treated in England, and that she was charmed by the warmth of her welcome there. Explaining the Commonwealth Government’s policy for the maintenance of main roads, the Minister of Commerce, Mr. H. E. Pratten, announced increased tariff duties, which would operate from yesterday, on petrol, motor tvres and tubes, chassis and chassis parts, estimated to yield £1,560,000. The duty on petrol would be increased bv 2d. a gallon, on rubber tires bv 6d. a pound ,and other tire items 15 per cent.

During a debate in the House of Commons on the Gunrdians Default Bill, Lady Astor referred to municipal corruption. Before she had finished the sentence Mr. Jack Jones (Labour) shouted: “You are a liar if you say so.” On a general demand being made for withdrawal, Mr. Jones apologised and substituted the phrase “terminological inexactitude.” Mr. P. Lansburv (Labour) protested against a wealthv woman interfering when poor people’s conditions were being discussed.

The wrecked United States submarine S5l, which was rammed and sunk last September off the Connecticut coast, lias now been raised and towed to Brooklyn Naw Yard. When she is dry-docked the first task will be to cut through the hull with acetylene torches and remove the bodies of the officers and crew, of whom between 15 mid 29 are believed still to be within the vessel. The divers who examined the wreck while on the sea bottom state that they saw several of the crew, who obviously died at their posts. The wireless operator was still at the switch Similar conditions were found in the engine-room, where the bodies were seen at their posts, two men lying near the valve, indicating that they were trying to shut it off when the disaster happened.
